Chinese telecom Major Huawei is forcing users to install Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) on mobiles manufactured by other OEMs. Users using Huawei ecosystem products now need compulsorily install Huawei Mobile Services which seems doubtful when it is working on their own Mobile Operating System – Harmony OS.
Huawei have complicated past when it comes to security concerns. Last year Trump Administration (USA) put Huawei in “Entity List” and ordered all American companies to stop tech supply to Huawei. Well that is just bit background and things those have some truth.
Huawei Mobile Services (HMS)
As USA banned all American tech companies to supply American origin technology to Huawei, Google can’t certify and allow Google Mobile Services or commonly Google Play Services in Huawei Mobile. While Android being originated from Open Source (AOSP), anyone has right to use Android, Huawei cannot install Google Apps officially.
To avoid this problem, Huawei is working on their own alternative of Mobile Services which will be integrated into OS level and work with major features like back-up & sync, Contact, Location & other various critical Operating System function.
Huawei Mobile Services is alternative created by Huawei to deal with above situation and comes pre-installed with EMUI (Huawei version of Android) on Huawei & Honor phones.
Huawei Forcing to HMS on other mobiles
Huawei has large ecosystem of product. They are not only second largest Cell Phone manufacturers, but also other related products such as Smart bands, Smartwatches, and more connected daily life products.
Huawei Health App & Huawei Mobile Services
We have smart-band from Huawei’s sub-brand Honor. Until few days ago, everything was fine. All notifications & counters were working as earlier. Suddenly, connectivity is lost with phone. When we opened Huawei Health app, the app is throwing an error and closing itself.
Oh, wait! Did we tell you; we have installed Huawei Health app on Nokia 6.1 phone. That is Phone running on Android 10 and part of Android One program. Let’s have a look at screenshot throwing error.
Huawei Health requires a more recent version of Huawei Mobile Services (4.0.0 or later) to work properly. You can get the latest version in HUAWEI AppGallery.
Response of Huawei (Honor)
Well, we asked Huawei about the incident and they referred to Honor support. Here is their response about the above error message.
The exact same situation has also been with other users. If you want to use Huawei devices, you must install Huawei Mobile Services in your phone whether you want to or not. This is surely not the way.
Where to find Huawei Mobile Services (HMS 4.0.0 or Higher)
Well, if you do not have problem installing HMS application, it’s your will. But, where to find Huawei Mobile Services is the question now. As App warns and exits itself but do not redirect to Download Page or provide any guideline.
Google Play Store has outdated version (3.x) of Huawei Mobile Service which was last updated in December 2019. You have to download this from Huawei Servers and install as APK from unknown source. Link is in below tweet. Kindly note, this is a direct link to APK file. This APK file is with package name
com.huawei.hwid.2001162229.apk and is nearly 139 MB in size.
How to use bands/watches with installing HMS?
For now, there are ways you could use your devices without installing Huawei Mobile Services. Follow below process to avoid this forceful situation.
- Un-install Huawei Health App.
- Re-install Huawei Health App.
- It will ask you to Enable Auto-Update firmware over Wi-Fi, disable that feature.
Well, we would like to hear your view on what you did? Did you install HMS or just skipped and worked on alternative for now? Please drop a comment and let us know.
